Gary was born April 29, 1951 in Carroll County to the late Harvie Benjamin Wright and Mary Turner Wright. He was a member of Centralhatchee First Baptist Church.

He began work with Southern Bell when he was 17 years old. He was drafted into the US Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam Era.

After returning home he continued his employment with Southern Bell (now AT&T) and retired with more than 33 years of service.

In his free time he dedicated his life to his family and community. He coached Shane’s Little League team and was one of its most vocal supporters. He attended games Trina was involved in as a band member and cheerleader.

When the grandchildren came along, he rarely missed any event they had at school.

He was a founding member of the Touchdown Club and helped raise the funds for the first fieldhouse at Staples Stadium for the football team.

He served as the president of the PTA, was elected to serve on the Heard County Board of Education for District 2, and served his county on the Board of Equalization.

One of his passions was antique cars. He loved to restore them into hot rods. He was active in the National Street Rod Association and the Georgia Street Rod Association. He attended car shows all around the Southeast and drove his own car in many tours with the friends he made from all over the country.

He was affectionately known as “Pop” in the family. He loved being a mentor to his children and grandchildren. He was always there to fix anything they needed.

The most special one in his life was Karen. They fell in love as teenagers and were married 51 ½ wonderful years. They went on many vacations together, but their favorite place was the beach, especially Florida.

They also took the grandkids camping on numerous occasions. Gary wanted to spend every precious moment with his family that he possibly could.

Survivors include his loving wife, Karen Wright of Roopville; one daughter, Trina Wright Hannah of Roopville; one son, Shane Wright (Kim) of Franklin; five grandchildren, Kolby Hannah, Collin Wright, Ty Hannah, Hannah Rose Wright, and Kassi Hannah; one sister, Jean Duke (Jerry) of Centralhatchee; sisters-in-law, Sherrie Noles (Wesley) and Florrie Barnes (Eddie); brothers-in-law, Tim Holtzclaw (Sandra) and Jerome Whitley; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters: Carolyn Wright and Linda Whitley; and a brother, Gainous Wright.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the cemetery funds at Centralhatchee First Baptist Church and Antioch Baptist Church.
