Mr. Lawrence Daniel Joyner

Mr. Lawrence Daniel Joyner, age 76 of Morganton, GA passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2020.

As a young man, he joined the Navy at age 17 and served on the U.S.S. Midway for six years. He was a medic, and studied fire science while serving in the Navy.

He realized he had a calling to be a fire fighter, and he began his career as a firefighter with the city of College Park, Georgia.

He was an arson investigator for 15 years while with the department; he also trained to become a cardiac tech and paramedic.

While being incapacitated with a severe broken leg, he took the cardiac tech and paramedic course and passed with state high honors, all while being on duty with the fire department.

He then moved to Ephesus, Georgia where he became the fire chief for the Heard County Fire Department and founded the volunteer fire department; he taught and trained over 600 men which were volunteers under his command.

He continued to work with the city of College Park while being chief of Heard County as well before retiring from the city of College Park in August of 2000. He enjoyed camping numerous times at Elkmount Campground in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park for many years.

Mr. Joyner was born with a green thumb and enjoyed gardening, raising all types of fruits and vegetables.

Some of his true loves where his pets Duggie Joyner (dog), Chomper Joyner (dog), Milo Joyner (cat) and Weenie Joyner (dog).

He had the gift of gab and always loved to speak with everyone. He loved to tell stories about his younger years, and we all enjoyed listening to them.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Montine Joyner; daughters and son-in-law, Erica McCoy, Paige and Justin (T) Martin; son, Jonathan Daniel Joyner; grandsons, Austin Salazar and his wife Jordan Salazar, Alex Salazar, Andrew Salazar, Dade Joyner; granddaughters, Arial Joyner (whose nickname to him was “Wiggle”) and Lorelei Maggie Joyner; and great grandson Jaxson Salazar. He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and wife Sharon Joyner, Ben and wife Helen Joyner, Johnny Joyner and sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and husband Tom Fava, and Thelma and husband Roy Shepard; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Benjamin Joyner, and mother, Ollie T. Farrell; brother, Jack Graham Joyner; sister, Boots Williams, and baby sister, Beverly Jane Joyner.

A graveside service will be held at the Tallapoosa Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 3:00 p.m with Elder James Blair officiating with eulogies provided by Mr. Phil Carriger and Mr. Larry Few.

Firemen will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Jonathan Joyner, Justin Martin, Austin Salazar, Alex Salazar, Andrew Salazar and Dade Joyner.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a Volunteer Fire Department of your choosing.
