Mr. Lewis C. Spruill

Thumbnail (4)Mr. Lewis C. Spruill, age 90, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 25, 2016.

He was born to the late Zach C. Spruill and Josie Ola Thompson Spruill Nutt, October 12, 1926, near Franklin, Georgia, and was reared in Heard County, Georgia.

He graduated from Centralhatchee High School in Heard County in 1943; attended West Georgia College in Carrollton; and later attended Berry College in Rome, Georgia.

A veteran of the United States Navy, he served as a “Frogman” (which later became the Seals) in the South Pacific during World War II.

Following his service to his country he began a career that spanned 48 years and included serving in various marketing and management positions with three major oil companies, Standard Oil of Kentucky, Sinclair Refining Co. and B P Oil Corp. He retired from B P in 1973. From 1973 to 1976 he served as the Director of the Georgia State Energy Office, a member of the L P Gas Industry Advisory Committee of the Federal Energy Administration and during the same time he served on the Solar Energy Site Selection Committee of former Governors Jimmy Carter and George Busbee.

He also served on the Motor Fuels and Operations and Engineering Committees of the Petroleum Marketers Association of America; the Board of Directors of The Georgia Oilmen’s Association; the Insurance Committee and the Policy and Planning Committee of the Georgia Oilmen’s Association.

Prior to retirement, he also served on the Advisory Board of Directors of the Suntrust Bank, N.A. from 1992 until 1998.

In 1977 he founded Spruill Oil Company, an Exxon Petroleum Distributorship, and Speedy Shops, Inc., a chain of Convenience stores, and served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board until the Companies were sold in 1994.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Duane Lewis Spruill.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Yarbrough Spruill, a former classmate, to whom he married in 1947; daughter-in-law, Teresa Brock Spruill of Carrollton, GA (wife of deceased son, Duane); son, Larry P. Spruill (Dale) of Roopville, GA. Also, surviving are four grandchildren Jason Spruill, of Atlanta, GA, Erin Williams, of Odessa, TX, Zach Spruill of Bowdon, GA, Judson Spruill (Meghan) of Franklin, GA; and step-grandson, John T. Cene (Celia) of Columbia, SC, and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 30, 2016 from the First Baptist Church of Carrollton with Dr. Steve Davis and Rev. Henry Tyson officiating.

Entombment services will follow in Carrollton City Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, December 29, 2016 from 12 Noon until 2:00 PM and from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church at 102 Dixie Street, Carrollton, GA 30117.
