Mr. Wayne “Red” Sanders

Mr. Benjamin Wayne “Red” Sanders, age 83, of Franklin passed away June 6, 2020.

His funeral will be held Thursday June 11, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Glenloch Baptist Church.

Among those giving remarks will be Rev. Rodney Roquemore, Rev. Kevin Geter, and Mr. Hadley Sanders.

Interment will follow in New Springs Church Cemetery.

The family will accept guests at Glenloch Baptist Church Thursday afternoon from 12:00 – 2:00 PM.

Red was born July 6, 1936 in Chambers County, AL to the late Buford Smith Sanders and Eucal Ruth Hester Sanders.

He grew up working on his father’s farm and developed a work ethic unlike many have known. At the age of 15 he quit high school to work in farming full time.

Over the years he built his livestock business into one of the most prominent in not only Georgia, but the United States.

He traveled extensively buying and selling cattle. He became known as a very shrewd businessman who probably knew more about cows than anyone alive. He developed relationships with farmers from all over the country.

They respected him as one of the greatest cattlemen of his generation.

He was one of the hardest working men around. Even after being injured several times while rounding up cows, he always got up and kept going. He rarely took a day off and often worked all hours tending to his herd.

He liked to watch western movies and TV shows. His favorite meal usually involved beef in one form or another, whether it was a juicy hamburger or a nice grilled steak.

He was a Christian by faith. Although he had no home church, he enjoyed attending New Springs Church and Olive Branch Baptist Church when he was able.

Above all, he loved his family, and instilled in his children and grandchildren the same work ethic that had served him so well. The knowledge he passed down to them is priceless, and the void he leaves behind can never be filled.

Survivors include one daughter, Traci Hammond (Shawn); one son, Shane Sanders (Hannah); daughter-in-law, Lynda Sanders all of Franklin; adopted son, Mike “Moose” Thompson; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a number of other relatives; and a host of friends from across the country.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Sanders; one son, Shannon Sanders; two sisters, Sara Adams and Ella Mae Wright; and one brother, Lewis Sanders.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Springs Church or Olive Branch Baptist Church.
