Mr. William Selby Bledsoe

BledsoeMr. William Selby Bledsoe, 88, of Franklin, GA passed away on Wednesday April 20, 2016.

He was best known to the LaGrange community as the always cheerful man at the post office having served the US Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 1989.

Mr. Bledsoe was a third generation “letter carrier” following the path of his father and grandfather respectively, but prior to his USPS tenure he worked for Callaway Mills in LaGrange, served in the US Navy during WWII, then worked for a short time for Milliken & Company’s environmental control section at the Hillside plant; a neighborhood where he had lived much of his life.

He was a 1944 graduate of LaGrange High School, having lettered in basketball, then attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (later: Auburn University).

Mr. Bledsoe was a lifelong practicing Christian with strong values and a true loving heart, serving in many capacities in his church; notably as a deacon as well as treasurer of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church, and also as a deacon of Antioch Baptist Church in Franklin, GA, his childhood and twilight year church home.

It was always his wish to honor God and treat his fellow man with love and respect and to pass along his values to younger generations.

“Daddy Bill,” as he was known as by family and those close to him, is preceded in death by parents George William Edgar Bledsoe and Mattie Ester Talley Bledsoe, his wife of 55 years Velma Phillips Bledsoe of LaGrange, brother Elvis Stewart Bledsoe of Franklin, his first daughter Tommie Geraldine Bledsoe and later by his second wife Edna Williamson Bledsoe of LaFayette, AL.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Anya and Tim Looney, grandson William Paul Barnes, his youngest brother Douglas Bledsoe of Versailles, KY, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in West Georgia and East Alabama.

He is remembered with fond thoughts by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

A funeral service in Mr. Bledsoe’s honor was held on Saturday, April 23 at the funeral home, with Rev. Andy Buchanan officiating. Interment was at Restlawn Memory Gardens following the service.
