Mrs. Eva Mathews Tompkins

Mrs. Eva Lurlene Mathews Tompkins, age 88 of Franklin, Georgia passed away on Friday, May 11, 2012 at the Carrollton Manor Nursing Home in Carrollton, Georgia.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tompkins will be conducted on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. from the Franklin United Methodist Church with the Reverend Brett Mathews officiating.

The family will receive guests at the church one hour prior to service time. The interment will follow in the Franklin City Cemetery.

Mrs. Tompkins was born in Heard County, Georgia on July 21, 1923, the daughter of the late Erastus Olin Mathews and Verna Lynette Glover Mathews. She was a 1940 graduate of Heard County High School where she was a member of the Championship Girl’s Basketball Team.

In her younger years she was the clerk at Franklin Pharmacy. It was a time when the drug store was the main location for young people to gather for an afternoon snack or to buy a gift. It was always a treat to have “Miss Eva” help with a fragrance or make up.

Later she was a great asset to the people of Heard County where she served as the secretary for the Heard County Probate Judge. She was a faithful member of the Franklin United Methodist Church.

She was a supportive wife who assisted her husband, the late Kyle Tompkins from behind the scenes with his very successful Boy Scout program which he conducted for many years.

Even though most would say Miss Eva was a no nonsense, plain spoken person, she had a great soft spot for her two lovely daughters, Felecia and Margo. They were the joy of her life! She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughters, Felicia Lanham (Eddie) of Brooks, Ga., and Margo Prince of Roopville, GA.; one sister, Narvell Acree of Memphis, TN.; one brother, Glover Mathews of LaGrange, GA.; grandchildren, Venessa Prince White of Carrollton, GA., Scott Prince, and Kelly Prince Parker both of Peachtree City, GA.; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle Tompkins, parents, Verna and Olin Mathews, and brother, Merritt Mathews.

Tom Stutts & Son Funeral Home of Franklin, Georgia is in charge of arrangements.
