Mrs. Linda Shelnutt

Mrs. Linda Wylene Butler Shelnutt, age 76, of Franklin passed away Wednesday December 5, 2018.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shelnutt will be conducted Sunday December 9, 2018 at 2:00 PM from Franklin First Baptist Church with the Rev. Andrew Owensby officiating.

Interment will follow in Heard County Memorial Gardens.

The family will accept guests at Stutts Funeral Home Saturday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

Mrs. Shelnutt was born February 16, 1942 in Heard County to the late Jim Merrill Butler and Clara Laverne Kent Butler.

She was an active member of Franklin First Baptist Church. She loved to sing in the choir. She also enjoyed teaching the children in Sunday School.

She loved each and every one of her students, and it gave her great pride to have taught the current pastor, Andrew Owensby, when he was in Sunday School.

Miss Linda was a very active citizen of Heard County. She worked as the Director of the Heard County Community Outreach Program. Among her many accomplishments was organizing the first G.E.D. classes in Heard County. She coordinated with Rev. Bob Norton, who taught the classes.

She organized several chapters of the Red Hat Society, and was an active member of the “Feisty Red Hatters of Glenn.”

She had a deep love of history, and was an active member of the Heard County Historical Society. She contributed many stories to the “Heard and Scene” newsletter.

She also wrote a weekly column for the News and Banner named “This, That, and the Other,” in which she shared memories of her childhood, recipes, and happenings from everyday life.

She was proud of her Heard County roots, and helped to organize the yearly Victory School Reunion. She loved to see former classmates come to the area each year for food and fellowship.

In her free time she enjoyed working in her garden. She was especially proud of her flowers and vegetables. Having the family over for a home cooked meal from her own garden gave her great joy. When she organized a dinner party, she was in control of everything. She always felt most at ease when she ran the show.

Survivors include her husband, Morris Shelnutt of Franklin; one daughter, Wanda Shelnutt Haney of Roopville; two sons, Chris Shelnutt and Scott Shelnutt both of Savannah; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Shelba Jean Hardeman of Franklin; and a number of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jacel Butler and Russell Butler.
