Mattie Mae Rowland was born on March 16, 1925, the youngest of three children born to the late Oda and Howard Rowland, in Glenn (Heard County) Georgia.

Mattie joined State Line Baptist Church, Glenn, Georgia where her father was a deacon and was baptized at an early age. She was an active member of State Line.

Mattie was educated in the Heard County school system, where she participated in school plays. It was during one of these plays that her future husband, Roy B. Edmondson, saw her on stage and proclaimed her to be his wife.

Mattie and Roy did not meet until five years later. They were married six years later on December 28, 1948 in Atlanta, Georgia. The young couple made their home in Atlanta, Georgia and relocated to Arlington, Virginia in 1953.

After 21 years of marriage their union produced one daughter, Sheila.

In December 2011 following her husband’s home going, Mattie moved to Brentwood, Maryland with her daughter and granddaughter Maia Gabrielle. Once in Maryland, Mattie rejoined her New Prospect church family and also enjoyed visiting other churches with her family.

Mattie was a loving and devoted mother to Sheila and grandmother to the joy of her life, Maia. She also enjoyed going out to dinner with family and friends, casino trips, watching her stories, discussing each episode and then predicting what Victor was going to do next.

Everyone who met her loved her youthful spirit, sense of humor, beautiful hat collection, kind heart and the bright always ready smile.

During her short time in Maryland, Mattie acquired many surrogate grandchildren and was affectionately called Grandma Mattie.
