Mrs. Sara Crouch Starnes

Mrs. Sara Crouch Starnes, age 100, much loved Heard County author passed away at her daughter, Sara Sheppard’s home in Glenn, Georgia on September 1, 2011.

Funeral services for Mrs. Starnes were conducted on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. from the Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with son-in-law, Ted Sheppard, grandson, Scottie Sheppard, and Reverend Mike Watson officiating.

Music was provided by Ginger Stutts and Leesa Stutts Cothran. Those serving as pallbearers were Johnnie Starnes, Jimmy Starnes, Benji Starnes, Chris Starnes, Jeffrey Sheppard, and Anthony Starnes. The interment followed in the Mount Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Glenn, Georgia.

Mrs. Starnes was born in Glenn, Georgia on February 25, 1911, the daughter of the late John Clark Crouch and Leila Dallas Williams Crouch.

She was a member of the Glenn Baptist Church, but all her life she had enjoyed attending both her home church and the Mount Zion Methodist Church both in Glenn.

Many Heard County residents will remember the informative, caring, and sometime humorous articles that “Mrs. Sara” contributed to the News and Banner, from the time she was twelve years old until recent years when her health began to fail.

Her talent of writing enabled her to publish a book of poetry, and historical commentary on the town of Glenn and its citizens. Her Lord was always close to her, and it was obvious by the prayer journal she kept until just recently.

She enjoyed quilting, and was thrilled to be a charter member of The Feisty Red Hatters of Glenn, and the National Poets Society. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughter Sara (Ted) Sheppard; one son, Ben (Nita) Starnes all of Glenn, GA.; three daughters-in-law, Jan Starnes Fowler, Annette Starnes, and Gail Starnes Ferguson all of LaGrange, GA.; twelve grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Otis William Starnes, parents, John and Leila Crouch, and three sons, John William Starnes, Dallas David Starnes, and James Joseph Starnes.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to either the Glenn Baptist Church or the Mount Zion Church in Glenn, Georgia.

The Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home of Franklin, Georgia are in charge of arrangements.

  3. Deborah Garrett Quinn says

We just got the news of Cousin Sara’s passing. We enjoyed meeting her in 2007 when we were on our genealogy trip to find John Barnes Garrett’s grave in Heard County. She was so gracious to see us on such short notice and share her memories with us. We treasure the rag rugs she gave us too. May God bless and watch over her family.
