Mrs. Sylvia Thornton

Mrs. Sylvia Jean Wilkes Thornton, age 81, departed this life and gained her angel wings November 11, 2020.

The family invites guests to gather at Stutts Funeral Home Wednesday November 18, 2020 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

A celebration of her life will follow at 2:00 PM at the graveside at Heard County Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Thornton began her earthly journey May 9, 1939 in Randolph County, AL, daughter of the late Earnest Wilkes and Mary McLemore Wilkes.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to Johnnie B. Thornton, Sr., who preceded her in death.

Moments spent with her extended family were especially precious to her. She dearly loved all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She attended Christ Like Ministries, where she had served since 2007. She enjoyed singing praises to her Lord and Savior and serving Him with all her heart and soul.

She liked to eat collards and turnip greens. One of her favorite pastimes was walking for exercise.

Survivors include six daughters, Gloria Ballard (Randy) of Carrollton, Vickie Thornton of Franklin, Beverly Thornton of Carrollton, Kathy Heflin (Gary) of Carrollton, Karon Thomas of Spartanburg, SC, and Wendy Thornton of Carrollton; one son, Johnnie B. Thornton, Jr. (Leva) of Franklin; 20 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Wilkes Smith of Atlanta and Lucille Wilkes Wyatt of Bowdon; sisters-in-law, Mary Thornton, Artist Andrews, and Ida V. Bohannon; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Fannie Mae Johnson; and three brothers, Roosevelt Wilkes, Lloyd Wilkes, and Earnest Wilkes, Jr.
