According to a report by the Georgia State Patrol, the accident involved a Heard County school bus driven by Benjamin Hyatt of Franklin and a Mazda 6 driven by Steven Chalker of Centralhatchee.

The accident occurred Thursday afternoon as Hyatt was en route to Carrollton to pick up Heard County students participating in the 12 For Life program.

Reports indicate Hyatt was traveling northbound on Welcome Road in northern Heard County when Chalker and the Mazda 6 crossed over into the northbound lane striking the bus and causing it to overturn on its side.

Hyatt, a former Heard County School Superintendent, was transported to Tanner Medical Center and later released with only minor injuries.

There were no students or other passengers aboard the bus at the time of the crash.

Chalker, age 35, is charged with Driving on Wrong Side of Roadway; Failure to Maintain Lane; and Suspended, Cancelled, or Revoked Registration.

School officials said Friday afternoon the amount of damage to the bus is yet to be determined but that it might be a total loss.
