Pastoral Nuggets: All or Nothing

Brother-Aaron-236x300In his book, “Kingdom Matrix”, author Jeff Chistopherson makes three brutally honest statements regarding the Christian experience. These statements are at the heart of this column.

First he said, “At any given moment I am either expanding the Kingdom of God or the Dimension of Darkness. Period.”

Secondly he said, “There are only two spiritual realms – the Kingdom of God and the Dominion of Darkness. There isn’t a third kingdom.”

And thirdly he says, “The masters to whom we pay allegiance clearly indicate which Kingdom we advance at any given moment.  In the battle of good and evil, there clearly is no demilitarized zone.  We are for Him or we are against Him.  We are never undecided.”

In Matthew 12:30, Jesus said, “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.”

And in Matthew 7:13-14 He said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

And in John 3: 16, Jesus teaches us that we must be born again. We find in these verses a very clear Biblical teaching: Christianity is an all or nothing proposition. Now, as Christians, I’m not saying we are capable of living a perfect life. We aren’t. If we can, then Jesus died in vain. But what I am saying is that our commitment to Jesus is an all or nothing proposition. Go back and reread the first paragraph. There are only two kingdoms. We are either advancing one or the other!

May I be Judgment Day honest with you? I have no problem in aspiring to a “highly Spiritual” “religious walk!” In fact, there are times I go there! As you, many times I have had “mountain top experiences” with Jesus! In Ephesians 2:6 Paul said it like this, “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” I’ve been there!

However, on the other hand, I know there is a very real, dark, and ugly place where sin abides. And quite honestly, I go there more often than I care to admit. The fact is that I’m a weak imperfect vessel. I haven’t arrived yet! I’m a work in progress. But in my humanity, I try to reconcile in my mind that because I am not always on the mountain top – NOR am I always delving into sin – there must be an “in between place” where I don’t have to be hot or cold – a “neutral place” where I can safely dwell.

Ain’t but one problem with that – THERE IS NO SUCH PLACE! Again, there are only two spiritual realms – the Kingdom of God and the Dominion of Darkness. There is not a third kingdom.” And I am for Him or against Him, but I’m never undecided!

I believe America is in the mess it is in today because, by and large, the pulpits in our churches no longer preach what I have just said. There are no requirements or expectations associated with Christianity.

We no longer believe, teach, or demand that Christianity is an all or nothing proposition – evidenced by a changed lifestyle! We believe that we can mix our own beliefs and practices with Biblical principles and come up with our own homegrown brand of gospel – and we’ll be alright. The Bible refers to this as, “… having a form of Godliness but denying the power thereof.”

Matthew 6:24 clearly warns, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” It’s an all or nothing proposition. “In the battle of good and evil, there clearly is no demilitarized zone. We are for Him or we are against Him. We are never undecided.”

What will you do with Jesus? Will you commit your life to Him? Make your decision wisely – for it’s an all or nothing proposition with eternal consequences.
