Pastoral Nuggets: Politically Incorrect Ramblings (Less and Less About More and More)

Brother-Aaron-236x300I was having lunch the other day with Danny Watters, one of our Georgia Baptist Convention State Missionaries.

Danny mentioned having breakfast with an old college professor of his. He said that as they were waxing eloquent about some political problem that neither of them understood, the professor leaned back and said, “Danny, the older I get and the more I examine politics, I find that I know less and less about more and more.”

I thought to myself, “Man!  I can relate to that statement! The older I get, the dumber I get!” And with me it’s not just about politics! It’s about most everything!

When it comes to questions about the church world, I have often made the statement to people, “I wish you would have asked me that question when I was serving at my first pastorate. I knew all the answers back then.

Today I don’t even know the questions, much less the answers!” I was ignorance on a rampage at my first pastorate! I may not have always been right, but I was always convinced of whatever it was I was saying!

Today I’m as dumb as a post and not half as useful! Today I find myself using phrases like, “I don’t know” and “It is what it is” waaaaayyyy too often.

Not long ago the Chief of the Atlanta Fire Department wrote a book in which he told the Biblical truth about homosexuality. As a result, the mayor of Atlanta fired him. I guess freedom of speech applies to everybody but conservative Christians. Evidently, I know less and less about more and more.

One of the common politically correct terms I hear today is “Hate Crimes.” I’m sorry. I just don’t get it. Shouldn’t a crime be prosecuted, without prejudice, to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of whom the crime was committed against?

For example, if someone is murdered and the circumstances surrounding the crime warrant it being prosecuted as murder one, should race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation have any bearing on how vigorously the case is prosecuted?

To say that a crime against someone who falls into some sort of protected category, will be prosecuted more vigorously than another victim of the same crime who is not a member of that protected category, both cheapens and degrades their life! But here again, evidently I know less and less about more and more.

Every day America is going into debt at a rate that is mind-boggling. Don’t we realize that somewhere along the way we have to pay the piper? Don’t we know that if our outgo exceeds our income our upkeep will be our downfall?  Alas!  I know less and less about more and more.

Fifty Shades of Gray opened in theaters this past weekend. I was amazed at the number of good Christian people who posted on their Facebook pages that they were at the theatre watching it. I think if I were going to see it, I wouldn’t post it on Facebook.

However, on second thought, why not? People post all their other personal business there! So, why not this?  Evidently, I know less and less about more and more.

Regarding Israel, God said in Genesis 12:3(KJV), “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” And our President is bent on doing everything he can to cause problems with Israel. I don’t get it! Again, I know less and less about more and more!

Families, governments, schools, churches, and society as a whole is in trouble. In a time when we should individually and corporately be turning to Jesus, we are turning away. I just don’t get it. I am shaking my head realizing I know less and less about more and more. God help us!
