Pastoral Nuggets: Tolerance and Apathy

Brother-Aaron-236x300It is reported that Aristotle said, “Tolerance and apathy are the last traits of a dying society.” However, there is some confusion as to whether he actually said it or not. But regardless of who said it, it is correct!

That great theologian, Roger Miller, (I’m being sarcastic!) once wrote in the lyrics of a song, “England swings like a pendulum do, Bobbies on bicycles, two by two Westminster Abbey, the tower of Big Ben, The rosy-red cheeks of the little children.”

You have just read two seemingly unrelated quotes. However, in my opinion, they represent where America is today and what needs to happen. Tolerance and apathy are the order of the day in America. Therefore, according to Aristotle, we are a dying society.

All throughout American history the pendulum governing our Spirituality and morality has never stopped swinging. It goes from one extreme to the other.

And in my opinion, Spirituality and morality have always been at their worst when the pendulum is reaching the apex of its swing cycle. Too much of anything is bad – even religion. That’s where cults and jihadists come from.

Sadly, the pendulum has swung to the point where political correctness, tolerance, and things that defy logic are being touted today as what is right.

The pendulum began its current swing in the 1960’s. Kennedy was assassinated, women burned their bras, Dr. Spock wrote his book, and on their way to San Francisco and Woodstock, the young folks tuned-in, turned on, and dropped out.  Drugs became rampant, love was free, and everybody had a flower in their hair.

The church was scorned, abortion was legalized, prayer and discipline were removed from our homes and schools, and people began to rebel and protest against authority of any kind. Tolerance and apathy began to make its way into society and has culminated with the society we have today!  And we are in a bona fide mess! Haven’t we done a wonderful job?

The thing that frosts me about America’s politically correct tolerance and apathy is that those who tout it the most are generally the ones who are the most intolerant of Conservative Christianity. And make no mistake; society is very intolerant of Conservative Christianity. You don’t believe it? Take a public stand for Conservative Christian Values and watch the wolves start circling you!

How do we start the pendulum swinging the other way? First – prayer. We need to pray for America as never before. Secondly, one by one and family by family, we need to stand as Joshua in the Bible and declare, “… As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” We need Christians who will tell satan: “Oh, no! Not my child. You cannot have my child! Nor can you have my marriage, my family, my church, or my country!”

It’s time we discipline ourselves, our children, our institutions, and once again demand and settle for nothing less than Spiritual excellence! It’s time we again adhere to Biblical standards.

It’s time we once again stand for what is right and against what is wrong! It’s time we put God back on the throne of our lives and in charge of America.

And it’s time we get rid of this devilish doctrine of politically correct tolerance and apathy. God is neither. Therefore, we should be neither. It’s time for the pendulum to swing!
