Perfect touchdown pass by Hannah Joe Montana leads HCMS to championship in overtime thriller

With under 20 seconds to play in overtime last night, Hannah Sanders grabbed a rebound under the Red Devils basket and immediately turned into Joe Montana when she launched a perfect pass the full length of the floor which hit Alyssa Cosper in stride right under the Brave’s basket.

Even though she was fouled Alyssa still connected on the lay-up to put the Lady Braves on top of Bowdon 30-28.

An Erica Emory free throw then capped the game as the girls claimed the West Georgia Middle School Athletic Conference Small School championship trophy for the second time in the past three seasons.

As is typical when the Lady Braves meet their arch rival Red Devils, it is always a hard-fought battle to the end.

After trailing 3-0 on a Montgomery 3-pointer for the Devils early, the Lady Braves took over and led for the entire game until the very last seconds.

A Devil’s basket with just seconds to play in regulation tied the game at 26-26. The Braves showed a real team effort on the court fighting for rebounds all game long and matching the Red Devils intensity which was at a very high pace.

Erica Emory was the leader on offense with 12 points followed by Cosper with eight and Kemaiya Brewer with seven. On defense, Jordan Watson and Hannah Stephens played very well which led to the low total of points for Bowdon.

“This is what you work for all season and it could not have been more fitting than to get a close one over our rivals. The girls showed a lot of character tonight and I am very proud of them,” -Coach Kathy Scott
