Play Ball!

Little Oriole pals Cason Holtzclaw (L) and Carter Headley (R) enjoy the opening day of the tee-ball season. The Orioles are coached by Daphne Holtzclaw.

Spring was in the air last Saturday at the recreation department on Thompson Road as the Tee-Ball and Coach Pitch seasons kicked off.

Heard County Parks & Recreation offers co-ed Tee-Ball for ages 3-4 and a co-ed “Coach Pitch” program for ages 5-6. Both of these programs are completely educational and no score is kept during competition.

Tee-Ball is played in a “game-like” atmosphere and the entire line-up is allowed an at-bat during each inning. Coach Pitch is played with more game-like scenarios where defensive players are encouraged to record outs.

The season is five to six games long and usually lasts six weeks including practice. Participants are given a game jersey and a game hat.

The season concludes with “Hot Dog Saturday” where players are given a sack lunch and a trophy to reward them for their efforts.
