Region 5-AA Basketball Tournament Preview

(Franklin, GA) — The regular season came to an end Friday at Spencer in Columbus and now Heard High’s varsity basketball teams are preparing for the Region 5-AA Tournament this week.

The Lady Braves defeated Spencer 45-25 to close out the season with an impressive 10-2 region record and hold the No. 2 seed in the tourney.

Coach Helen Akins’ squad will face either No. 3 Bremen, No. 6 Jordan, or No. 7 Temple on Thursday at 4:00 PM in the region semifinals back at Spencer High School.

The Lamar County Lady Trojans are the No. 1 seed and will host either No. 4 Callaway or No. 5 Spencer in the other semifinal.

The Region 5-AA Championship game will take place Saturday night at 6:00 PM at Spencer.

The results of the tourney will also determine State Playoff seedings with the top four teams in 5-AA going on to battle Region 7-AA in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs February 14-15.

By virtue of earning the No. 2 seed, the Lady Braves will be in the state playoffs regardless of the region tourney results but each win will earn the squad a lower seeded 7-AA opponent in the first round at state.

With a win in Thursday’s semifinal, the Lady Braves would earn home court for the first state game.

On the boys’ side, the Braves dropped the final contest to Region No. 1 Spencer Friday to finish at 4-8 for the season in 5-AA.

The Braves enter the region tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face Jordan Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 PM at Temple High School.

Coach Derek Smith and the Braves will need a win over the Red Jackets Tuesday to advance to the state playoffs.

The squads split two regular season games with each team winning at home.

The winner of the Heard/Jordan game will move on to face No. 1 Spencer on Thursday at 8:30 PM at Spencer.

The other seeds competing in the men’s region tourney include No. 2 Callaway, No. 3 Temple, No. 6 Lamar County, and No. 7 Bremen.

Leading the way for the Lady Braves in Friday night’s win was Zekylah Boyd who finished with 18 points.

Other top scorers were Hermonie Garza with eight, Sophia Long with seven, and Jasmine Owens with six. The Lady Braves led 17-7 at the half before breaking it open in the second half.
