Head basketball coach Valeree Williams laid out a list of nine goals for her team before this season started and the Lady Braves checked another one of those goals off that list Friday night when they drubbed the Jordan Red Jackets 77-36 to claim the Region 5-AA Championship trophy.

Reece Walker was the hot shooter in the first quarter scoring 11 of the Braves 16 points but a Jordan 3-pointer closed the gap to 16-13 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter turned frightening real fast for the Jordan squad when Marlette Wilbur crashed head first into the concrete wall while chasing a loose ball.

It was eerily similar to what had happened to a Callaway boys team member on Thursday night and she had to be removed from the game by stretcher and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

As if things could not get any worse for the Jackets, moments later after play had resumed another player, Latannica Borders, crashed into the same wall and also had to leave in an ambulance.

After the loss of two of their athletes, the Jordan girls never seemed to recover and the Lady Braves cruised to the 41-point win. Reece Walker and Jemeka Parks led the scoring for the Braves with 22 points each and Walker was named as the tournament MVP.

Jasmine Cook continued her consistent scoring with 12 points and several other bench players also contributed including Cali Harrod with 8, Tanisha Johnson with four, and Christina Cole and Whitney Emory who each added two.

The Lady Braves will now host the loser of tonight’s game between Greater Atlanta Christian and Decatur (Update: GAC won the game so the Lady Braves will meet Decatur) in the first round of the GHSA State AA Playoffs Friday night at the high school. This was the first Region Championship for the girls since 2001-2002.

The Jordan team will face the winner of that game in round one. Carver defeated Kendrick 57-49 to earn the #3 seed.

Manchester Blue Devils 63, Jordan Red Jackets 61 (Boys Championship)

The region number two seed Blue Devils knocked off the top ranked team in the state 63-61 with a buzzer beater to win the boys crown. This was an exciting and very close game throughout. The Devils Saiquan Terry was named as the tourney MVP.

The Devils, who are also ranked in the state top ten got revenge for an earlier season loss to Jordan. Manchester will face the loser of today’s Decatur/South Atlanta game in round one while Jordan will face the winner. In the third place game Spencer defeated Callway 55-49 to earn the #3 seed. Great site! I was totally impressed by the Lady Braves team play and focus. Great job by the coaching staff. It reminded me of the great Lady Braves of the past. It was great to see so many old friends even though we were rivals of the past, especially Edward, the team’s manager.
