Region Runner-Up Lady Braves prepare to host Lions

2014-2015 Region 5-AA Runner-Up Lady Braves (L-R): Jayda Holley (M), Gabby Owensby (M), Hannah Stephens, Madison Whitehead, Kemaiya Brewer, Sage Kelley, Sarah Schofield, Cali Harrod, Jordan Watson, Whitney Emory, Kimberly Harris, Alyssa Cosper, Erica Emory, Alley Harris, and Emily Iddins

(Franklin) — The Lady Braves did not get the outcome they hoped for Saturday night in Manchester but a couple of key wins late in the season have them poised to host a first round state playoff game at Heard High School Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.

Coach Helen Akins’ squad battled all the way down to the wire Saturday before the top-seeded Lady Blue Devils (23-2) got the 58-49 win Saturday night.

Despite the disappointing region championship game loss, the Lady Braves (10-16) did gain some momentum late as they had trailed by 20 heading into the final period.

The region runner-ups now hope to capitalize on two key wins late in the season which boosted them from the #4 seed up to the #2 seed in Region 5-AA.

“We did ourselves a huge favor finishing second in the region,” said Akins. “I am so proud of our kids. Jordan Watson had an unbelievable region tournament — what a competitor and leader. She played with a stomach virus all weekend.”

Watson led the team in scoring along with break-out sophomore Kimberly Harris, with each girl posting 16 points. Junior Madison Whitehead added 10.

As a result of a last minute shot by Whitehead to knock off Bremen in the regular season finale and a huge win over Bowdon in the first round of the region tournament on Friday, the girls are in a much more advantageous spot entering the state tournament.

While Bremen and Bowdon will be traveling to face two of the top teams in the state , the Lady Braves will get to be at home where they will host the Lovett Lions (18-8) from Region 6-AA.

It will be the first time since the 2011-2012 quarterfinal run that the Lady Braves have been to the State Tournament.

The winner of Tuesday’s game will then face the winner of  Metter (#1 seed, Region 3-AA) and Monticello (#4 seed, Region 3-AA) this weekend in round two.

  1. Lots of home cooking in this game especially in the first quarter, most bad calls I have witnessed in a long time.

  2. Wylene Spearman says:

Good Job, Lady Braves! Hang tough in playoffs!
