Run Burgos Run! Senior Brave Runner Dominates AA Sectional Meet

(Barnesville, GA)  – The day started and ended in much the same way for the Braves at the Class AA State Track and Field Sectionals at Lamar County High School in Barnesville Saturday.

Senior long distance runner Orlando Burgos scorched the field in the 1600 meter run to begin the meet in the morning, and before the day was complete, he dominated the field once again in the 3200 meter race in the evening.

In all sectional events, the top eight finishers qualify for the state finals.

Burgos came in as the odds on favorite in the sectional, which featured athletes from Regions 1,2,4, and 5, but based on times posted from both of Saturday’s sectionals (the other featuring athletes from Regions 3, 6,7, and 8 was held at greater Atlanta Christian in Atlanta), Burgos appears poised for a serious run at Heard County’s first GHSA State Championship performance.

(EDITOR’s NOTE: Thanks to a reader comment, we were able to determine that in fact Heard County did have a State Champion when Ricky Zachary won the Class B 2-Mile Run in 1971.)

In the 3200, he came in ten full seconds under his personal best at 9:53 and a full 30+ seconds in front of the second place finisher, Guthrie Edwards of Pelham High School.

In the 1600, Burgos recorded a finish of 4:31.34 five seconds ahead of Spencer’s Eddie Stafford.

Based on times from both sectionals, it seems a close battle will take place at the State Finals this Thursday-Saturday in Jefferson, GA between Burgos and Jordan Flowers of Westminster.

Flowers won the other sectional in both the 1600 and 3200 as well. Though difficult to compare times under different tracks and conditions it should be noted that Burgos’ times bested Flowers in both races. Flowers finished the 1600 in 4:39:35 and the 3200 in 9:59.06.

Hank Barnes and Jonathon Hunt will also be traveling to Jefferson for the state finals after strong finishes in Barnesville.

Hunt finished fourth in the Shot Put with a distance of 44-feet-2.5-inches, while Barnes came in fourth in the Discuss with a throw of 123-feet-10.5- inches.

Barnes will compete Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the AA Discus event and Hunt will throw the Shot Put at 4:00 pm.

Burgos will enter the 1600 meter run at 7:30 pm Thursday evening and will return for the 3200 meter run Friday evening at 6:30 pm.

All events will take place at Jefferson High School. Stay tuned to for more sectional photos as well as live updates from the Jefferson meet this week.

Senior Brian Cosper, the Region 5-AA third place qualifier in the Shot Put, was a no-show for the meet. Based on his region throwing distances it appears he likely would have qualified for the state meet had he competed.

Other Braves who competed but did not qualify for state included Qua Reid (11th place- Long Jump), Elijah Toney (High Jump), Blake Tatum (11th place- Pole Vault), and Ethan Caldwell (12th place- Pole Vault).

I believe Rickey Zachary won State in the mile in the early Seventies.

Yes you are correct Old School, I did some research and found that Ricky Zachary won state in Class B in 1971 in the two-mile race! Thanks for the info!

I was close. I didn’t mean to take anything away from Burgos, hope he’s the next Champion.
