Sanders’ free throws cap stunning comeback by Lady Braves

(Franklin, GA) — The Lady Braves gave the home crowd a lot to cheer about with a stunning 41-40 comeback win over the Troup Lady Tigers at HHS Tuesday night.

Senior Hannah Sanders drained two free throws with just 0.5 seconds on the clock to propel her team to its sixth straight win in a game the Lady Braves trailed 40-30 with under five minutes to go in the game.

A key 3-point shot from junior Sage Kelley with 1:12 to play put the Coach Helen Akins’ Lady Braves in position for the exciting win.

Another junior, Emily Iddins had one of her best game of the season scoring eight points off the bench and was a big factor defensively.

The Lady Braves did not allow the Lady Tigers to score over the last five minutes of the fourth quarter.

Kimberly Harris led the team with 10 points while Sanders scored seven and Kelley along with Ally Harris each added six points.

“You know to not be quite on your game and find a way to get a win against an athletic team like Troup just says a lot about the character of our kids,” said Akins after the comeback win.

“There was no doubt in my mind Hannah was going to make those free throws and I couldn’t be prouder of the effort and play from Emily Iddins off the bench tonight — she really stepped up for us.”

The Lady Braves will have a week off before returning to the court next Tuesday night at home (6:00 PM) to face Mt. Zion.

Akins hopes the extra time at practice will give her squad a chance to tweak some things before the region schedule gets underway on January 3 at Callaway.

The Lady Braves move to 9-2 on the season and are now ranked No. 7 in the state in Class AA by Score Atlanta.
