Senior breaks HC pole vault record

Bill Singleton, a Heard High School senior, broke the school record in the pole vault  Saturday March 17 at Central High School in Carrollton.

Former Brave Davey Hunt literally set the bar in the field event with a mark of 13 feet four years ago in 2008. [gpslideshow]

Singleton not only broke that mark with a successful 13-feet 6-inch vault but also broke his own record on another attempt to set the new record at an outstanding 14 feet.

Singleton credits Drew Tatom with teaching him how to vault. He only learned the event three years ago as a sophomore.

According to his track coach, Thomas Sickman, Bill is the top vaulter in the state in Class AA right now and has a legitimate shot at a state championship.

This year’s boys championships will be in Jefferson, GA May 10-12. Bill has enlisted in the Marine ROTC program which he will begin right after graduation. After finishing that one year program he hopes to attend college at either Auburn or Georgia Tech.
