(Carrollton, GA) – As the number one ranked team in the state at the AA level, the Lady Braves varsity softball team is of course on the radar of all AA teams in the state.
After this weekend’s Trojan Slam in Carrollton, however, Coach Matt Hornsby’s squad may be serving notice to other classifications as well. The Lady Braves went a perfect 4-0 at the Slam garnering wins over three more ranked opponents including two top 10 teams from AAAAA and another top 10 team from AAA.
The team started slowly in the first game of the tournament Friday falling behind 5-0 after five innings to the seventh-ranked Blessed Trinity Titans from AAA. Things turned around quickly though as the Lady Braves battled back to win 6-5 on a game-winning base rip by junior Cali Harrod.
In game two, the Lady Braves relied on continued stellar pitching by Jordan Watson to shut out Alexander (5-AAAA) by a 6-0 final. Watson struck out eight and scattered six hits.

At the plate, Senior Jasmine Jacobs and sophomores Anna Shenutt and Alexis Raines led the way. Jacobs was 2-4 with an RBI while Shelnutt banged out three hits including a double. Raines had two RBI’s on a double.
In Saturday’s action, the Lady Braves squared off with two ranked schools from AAAAA. In the first game, the team scored a narrow win over the seventh-ranked Spartans of South Paulding.
A Cali Harrod homer tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning before the squad edged the Spartans 7-6. Anna Shelnutt had three more hits including two doubles and Watson proved she can do it at the plate as well as on the mound — she drove in three runs.
In another close match-up Saturday afternoon, the girls edged the fourth ranked team in AAAAA, the Buccaneers of Allatoona 3-2. The win gives the team a nine game winning streak.
The Lady Braves (13-2, 4-0) return to Region 5-AA action on Tuesday when they travel to Kendrick. They hit the road again on Wednesday to battle rival Pike County before returning home Thursday to face another region opponent in Manchester.
