Solid team effort leads Lady Braves to championship game

Heard Co. Braves 72, Kendrick Cherokees 57 (Girls)

A standing room only crowd packed into the Heard High School gymnasium Thursday night for the semi-finals of the Region 5-AA basketball tournament.

The top seeded Lady Braves did not disappoint the home crowd as they overcame a 43-point performance by Kendrick Cherokee sophomore Kahlia Lawrence to advance to Friday night’s region title game.

The Braves will face the Jordan Lady Red Jackets who edged the Carver Tigers in the early game.

This was the second time this season the the Braves knocked off the Cherokees who have recently been one of the most dominant teams in the state losing only a handful of games over the last five years. They won a state championship in 2007.

Tanisha Johnson

The Cherokees relied solely on the outstanding performance by Lawrence whereas the Braves won behind great performances from several players. Aaliyah Rutledge and Reece Walker led the scoring with 16 each and Jemeka Parks was close behind with 14.

Jasmine Cook continued her consistently solid scoring with 11. One of the real keys to the game for Coach Williams came from her bench.

Tanisha Johnson continued her strong defensive play and also scored five points. Most importantly she was able to give the big senior Rutledge a nice breather.

Freshman Cali Harrod notched a career high six points all of which came in the final quarter.

The Lady Braves will meet Jordan for the third time this season. They defeated the Red Jackets handily in both early season affairs, but the Columbus school has shown a lot of improvement in the last few weeks so expect a strong effort from the #2 seed.

Jordan Red Jackets 53, Carver Tigers 51 (Girls)

The closest game of the day was the early match-up between the #2 seed the Red Jackets and the #3 seed the Tigers.

Carver came back from a big deficit to take the lead late but were upended by Jordan by two points.

Leading scorer for the Tigers was Rutgers-bound Ariel Butts who scored 17 points while Tiouana Griggs led Jordan with 21.

Manchester Blue Devils 91, Callaway Cavaliers 61 (Boys)

A close game early turned into a blow-out as the Devils topped the Cavs big. Pop Favors led the Blue Devils with 18 points while the Cavs were led by Ricky Parks with 13.

The game was stopped for several minutes when Callaway’s Tyrell Tigner collided with the non-padded portion of the wall at the end of the court. He was transported from the game by ambulance.

Jordan Red Jackets 65, Spencer Greenwave 57 (Boys)

The Cinderella-like run for the Greenwave came to an end although they did lead the #1 team in the state 30-28 at halftime.

Jordan leading scorers were Demetrius Daniel with 20, Jamar Sheppard with 16, and Tony Palmer with 13.

Spencer was led by Cornelius Brown with 18 and Rahmel Moton with 17. The Greenwave face the Cavs tomorrow for third place.
