Star of 1978 World Series shares faith, advice with Lady Braves

Former New York Yankee second baseman Brian Doyle (4th from left) shared his testimony and playing advice with the Lady Braves softball teams Tuesday at HHS

(Franklin, GA) — A former major league baseball player and one of the heroes for the 1978 World Champion New York Yankees spent some time with the Lady Brave middle and high school softball players at Heard County High School yesterday.

Brian Doyle is a former infielder who played primarily as a second baseman for the New York Yankees and Oakland A’s.

Although a reserve for most of his career, Doyle starred in that 1978 World Series for the Yankees after an injury to Willie Randolph sidelined him for the series.

The Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.

In six World Series games, Doyle batted .438 with seven hits in 16 at bats, one double, four runs scored and two runs batted ins, leading the World Series in batting average while helping the Yankees to their second straight World Series victory.

He finished second to Bucky Dent in the series MVP voting.

Doyle shared his faith in a testimony to the Lady Braves Tuesday, speaking about overcoming leukemia in the early 1990’s after doctors told him he only had six months to live. He is also battling Parkinson’s Disease after being diagnosed in 2015.

Doyle also shared fielding and batting tips and offered motivational advice to the Lady Braves in attendance and wished the varsity team good luck in the Sweet 16 today at Rockmart.

The girls were especially impressed with Doyle’s World Championship ring. Doyle allowed a couple of lucky Lady Braves to wear the coveted ring for a photo.

The Lady Braves travel to Rockmart this afternoon to battle the No. 1 ranked Lady Yellow Jackets in a round two best-of-three series with a trip to next week’s GHSA Class AA state tournament at Columbus on the line.

The team’s will square off in a doubleheader today (5:00/7:00 PM) with a third and deciding “if” game on tap for 5:00 PM tomorrow if necessary.
