Superintendent Kay addresses community about GPAC concert series funding

Happy New Year Brave Nation,

I hope everyone is off to a great start to 2022!  In an effort to continue our transparency I am writing to disclose the details of the upcoming Concert Series at the new Heard County GPAC.

There have been community members who have expressed concerns about the building being used for community events that may become a burden for the taxpayers of Heard County.

First and foremost, I want to reiterate once again that the purpose of this facility is to showcase and celebrate the talents of our children.

Fine arts, athletics, performing arts, banquets, etc…will be hosted in the GPAC for 98.1% of its use (162 of 165 scheduled events).

The concert series will be a three night event that occurs in the months of January, February and March.

I’m sure you’ve seen the advertisements, but I’ll share again anyway:

January 22, 2022  Jon Langston will be coming to town

February 11, 2022  The Eaglemaniacs will be coming to town

March 12, 2022 Comedian Jeff Allen will be coming to town

The concerts will last about two hours a piece and will be paid for by private funding which has been  raised by Concert Series sponsors, season ticket sales, and individual ticket sales.

Again, for the purpose of transparency I will share the actual numbers down below in hopes to assure the taxpayers who are concerned that their tax dollars are not being used to fund an event for the public (which would be illegal by the way).

Expenditures for the series

Costs for the artists to be signed:  $39,600

Costs for opening acts:  $3,500

Professional sound/lighting assistance for concerts:  $8,000

Security/Police:  $1,080

Student workers:  $840

TOTAL COST FOR CONCERT SERIES = $53,020

Advertising

Heard County Football Program:  $350.00

Newnan Times-Herald:  $1,125.00

Times Georgian:  $800.00

Graddick Radio  $1,600.00

Facebook  $74.56

TOTAL COST FOR ADVERTISING =  $3,949.56

TOTAL COST FOR CONCERT SERIES:  $56,969.56

TOTAL REVENUE RAISED FOR CONCERT SERIES:  $78,480

(This includes concert series sponsors, season ticket sales and individual ticket sales, and is accurate as of Tuesday, January 4, 2022)

THE TOTAL BREAKDOWN

Total funds raised as of today:  $78,480

Total cost of the concert series:  $56,969.56

Total excess funds:  $21,510.44

What will the excess funds be used for?

  1.  To pay the electricity for the six hours of concerts

  2.  To pay the water for the six hours of concerts

  3.  To pay the heat/air for the six hours of concerts

  4.  To have funds to begin signing artists for the next concert series

In closing, what will the cost to the taxpayers of Heard County be to have the GPAC used for a concert series?  0 dollars.

The Heard County School System has the 8th lowest millage rate in the state of GA and has been recognized by SmartAsset.com as the #1 system for best bargain for their tax dollars when it comes to the productivity of the school system vs the tax dollars being spent.

Getting the most from the least is a great way to operate, and we intend to continue the tradition of excellence that has been established here while being mindful of the taxpayers of this county.

We thank you for the partnership, and we hope to see you at the GPAC!

Respectfully,

Rodney Kay

Superintendent
