(Franklin) — The Lady Braves got back on the winning track Wednesday afternoon at home, sweeping a doubleheader over the Pepperell Dragons by scores of 7-0 and 10-2 to advance to round two of the GHSA State Playoffs.
Senior Jasmine Jacobs strokes one of her six base hits in Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep of the Dragons. The Lady Braves now prepare to meet Social Circle in round two of the State Playoffs next week.
Senior catcher Jasmine Jacobs continued her hot hitting pounding out six hits, scoring five runs, and driving in three in the two game sweep of the 7-AA number three seed.
Jordan Watson also had another big day with six hits and five RBI’s including the only homer of the day in game two. Watson also got both wins on the mound for the Lady Braves who moved one step closer to the state tournament in Columbus which begins on October 31.
Junior Cali Harrod, Senior Shelby O’Neal, and sophomore Anna Shelnutt also had big days at the dish.
Head coach Matt Hornsby was proud to see the girls bounce back after Saturday’s loss in the Region 5-AA Championship game to Bremen. “We had a bad practice yesterday but we (the coaches) had a good feeling they would bounce back today. Our girls are always ready to play in the state playoffs,” said Hornsby.
The Lady Braves will now hit the road Wednesday for round two (4:00 pm/6:00 pm) as they travel to Social Circle, GA to take on the Redskins from Region 8-AA in a rematch from last year’s first round. The Lady Braves shut out the Redskins last year in a doubleheader in Franklin but this year’s Redskin squad appears to be much improved after knocking off Jefferson to claim a region title last Saturday. The Redskins are ranked #10 in the state by the AJC.
Other teams that advanced in the AA bracket included Bacon County, Bremen, Berrien County, Harlem, Calhoun, Vidalia, and the defending champs Dade County who eliminated Bowdon.
All other AA round one best-of-three series are going to a rubber game on Thursday with several top teams on the ropes including two number one seeds, Wesleyan who split a doubleheader with Oglethorpe County, and Jeff Davis who split with Bleckley County.
