Tecos Carrollton knocked off Racing last Sunday in the inaugural championship game of the Carrollton Amateur Soccer Association.

The match was a close one throughout with Racing clinging to a 1-0 lead late in regulation play.

Tecos were able to score a late goal to make the score 1-1 and send the championship to the always very intense penalty kicks.

Guadalupe scored the winning goal to give Tecos the big victory. About 75-100 spectators were on hand for the final which featured some quality soccer not often seen in the West Georgia Area amateur ranks.

The league was started by Juan Garcia, originally from Veracruz, Mexico, who also serves as a referee for the weekend matches.

Garcia had noticed a need in the Carroll County community for a soccer league geared toward the growing Hispanic population in the area.

He also wanted to create a competitive environment for the local adult and young adults in the area who love the world’s most popular sport but typically have only had access to back yard games in the Carrollton and Villa Rica areas.

The eight team league played a seven week schedule with games being played on weekends at the East Carroll Soccer Complex in Carrollton.

Players in a wide range of age groups competed including a 12-year-old goalie for one squad and several older adult players in their upper 40’s.

Garcia told us that he is very happy with the success of the first season and looks forward to many more.

He also wants to thank The Lazy Donkey restaurant in Carrollton for sponsoring the league and helping to make it all possible.

The winners from Tecos were given a trophy and new soccer jerseys compliments of the restaurant.
