The Top 11 Brave Nation Teams of 2011

1. Lady Braves Varsity Basketball

-The 2010-2011 Lady Braves basketball team led by first year head coach Valerie Williams upset the #2 seed Pepperell Dragons to advance to the GHSA Sweet Sixteen. The 2011-2012 team continued the winning ways in 2011 by starting the season 8-1 and winning the Haralson County Invitational Tournament. They were defeated in the Sweet Sixteen by the eventual state champion Buford Wolves.

2. Varsity Tennis

-The Varsity Mens and Ladies Tennis Squads both won Region Championships. The young tennis program coached by Brad McLain have made great strides after only a few seasons of competition. The boys were eliminated at state by North Murray and the girls were eliminated by Armuchee.

3. JV Football

-The Junior Varsity Braves did not have a championship to compete for but surprised everyone with an undefeated season which included several exciting wins. The season was especially great when you consider the number of young players who were forced to play on the varsity squad.

4. Lady Braves Varsity Softball

-The Lady Braves softball team coached by Matt Hornsby once again dominated Region 5-AA during both the regular season and the region tournament where they were crowned 5-AA champions for the second consecutive season. They were eliminated in the state playoffs in a very close series by the Lovett Lions.

5. HCMS Softball

-The Middle School Girls Softball Team coached by Kathy Scott finished the season with only one loss and captured the small school division championship with a win over the Bremen Blue Devils in the championship game at home.

6. Varsity Baseball

– The Varsity Baseball team coached by Shane Lassetter showed tremendous improvement in 2011 and defeated the Dade County Wolverines in a very exciting three game series to advance to the GHSA Sweet Sixteen where they were defeated by the Hart Co. Bulldogs.

7. Braves Marching Band

– The Marching Braves band led by director Nancy Heard finished off a solid year of competition performances with all Superior Ratings at the Peach State Marching Festival held in Rome, Ga. The band was then selected to perform during the Chick-Fil-A Bowl halftime show and parade where they appeared on ESPN.

8. HCMS Football

– The middle school Braves football team coached by Allen Sikes completed their first ever undefeated regular season and advanced all the way to the championship game where they were defeated by the Bowdon Red Devils at home.

9. 7-8 Braves Football

– Both of the 7-8 Football teams excelled this year. Cain Dean’s squad finished and undefeated regular season and advanced to the Kiwanis Bowl Championship where they were upended by an extremely talented Villa Rica team at UWG. Sammy Marsh’s squad captured the B-Bracket Championship over Trojan Orange at Carrollton High School to bring home the only Kiwanis Bowl Championship for Heard County.

10. HCMS Track

– The middle school track team under the leadership of head coach Allen Sikes were crowned with their second consecutive small school division championship trophy at HCMS.

11. Flag Braves

– The 5-6 year old Flag Braves coached by Ben Cosper finished the season undefeated before being upset in a heartbreaking loss at the Flag Bowl Championships at Mt. Zion.
