Three Braves make final podium at Class AA finals

(Albany, GA) — Three Brave track athletes found top eight finishes and earned spots on the final podium at this week’s GHSA Class AA State Finals held at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

Leading the way for the boys was senior Austin Miller, the lone male Brave athlete to make the trip after scoring top eight finishes in three different events at the Rockmart sectionals.

Miller’s top state finish came in the High Jump where he jumped 6-04.00 to win the third place medal. Miller also claimed a strong fifth place finish in the Long Jump with a mark of 21-11.50 and a 16th place finish in the 100 Meter Dash.

In the female events at Albany, it was upstart freshman athlete and last week’s Player of the Week Tori Caldwell who continued to shine scoring  two medal finishes — an outstanding accomplishment for just a freshman competitor on the state’s biggest stage.

Caldwell claimed the fifth place medal in the High Jump with a leap of 4-10.00 and she also scored the fifth place medal in the Pole Vault with a jump of 7-06.00.

The third Brave to earn a medal at the state finals was senior Dekaii Ogletree in the Triple Jump. Ogletree finished in seventh place at the difficult event with a total jump distance of 34-06.00.

In the long distance female running events, junior Holly Moreland scored an 11th place finish in the 3200 Meter and a 12th place finish in the 1600 Meter. Junior Catherine Newell also competed for the Lady Braves in the Pole Vault.

With three underclassmen earning trips to the finals, Coach Cory Shelnutt hopes for an even larger field to earn the trip next season as the program looks to rebuild.

Several other Brave underclass track competitors just missed making the trip to Albany after advancing to sectionals including Lily Langley, Hollis Alsobrook, Katlyn Henderson, and Matthew Arnold.

In men’s team results form Albany, Vidalia won the State Championship with 71 points just five points stronger than second place finishers Bleckley County.

In the women’s division, the Class AA Championship went to Jeff Davis High School (71 points) while second place went to South Atlanta with 50 points.
