(Franklin) — The HCMS Lady Braves entered the West Georgia Small School Division Tournament this week having dropped all 10 regular season games this season, but yesterday would be different as they pulled off an exciting win over the Mt. Zion Lady Eagles at Heard County Middle School in the opening round.

Haley Bennett led the way for the Lady Braves scoring 22 points to lead all scorers while making an impressive 16 of 24 shots at the free throw line.

The key shot of the game was a long 3-point basket from Alexus Crawford (see video below) with under a minute to play to give the Lady Braves their first lead of the fourth quarter. Crawford finished with 10 points.

The Lady Braves led 17-6 at the half before the Eagles stormed back with a 21-2 run in the third quarter. Coach Kelley Hadley’s squad then trailed by as many as eight points in the final five minutes of the game before the big turnaround.

Jennifer Graley also added six points in the 40-35 win.

Hadley was very proud of her girls efforts in their first win of the season. “It just feels unbelievable,” said Hadley after the game. “The girls have worked so hard and did everything we asked them to do this year and finally they decided to have confidence and it all came together.”

The middle Lady Braves will have little time to celebrate as they must now face the top-seeded Villa Rica Lady Wildcats today at 6:30 p.m. at HCMS.

HCMS is hosting both the boy’s and girl’s tournaments this week with the championship games taking place on Thursday.

Coach Joe Nutt and the Braves boy’s team will battle Mt. Zion in the semifinals Wednesday afternoon at 5:00.
