Tomahawk Talk (11/10/14)

(Franklin) — There is a chill in the air which means a couple of things, high school football playoffs are here and wrestling and basketball season are starting.

We completed the first full week of basketball and wrestling practice last week. Our athletes are working hard preparing for their first events of the young season.

Our basketball teams concluded week one by hosting a midnight madness event on Friday night where they displayed their skills against the HCMS coaching staff as well as scrimmaged against each other.

This was a very action packed event with lots of great shooting and ball handling skills on display.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to support our athletes on Friday night. (We really know, you came hoping to see some of us old people fall out. HaHa)

Beginning next Monday, Nov. 17 at HCMS is the 4th Annual Basketball Turkey Shootout and we will be hosting some of the best basketball teams from West Georgia and East Alabama.

There has been a different champion in the boys and girls divisions each year the shootout has been played. Will there finally be a team to win it twice or will another new champion be crowned in each division?

The teams in this year’s field include Heard County, Greenville, Carrollton, Callaway, Gardner Newman, Long Cane, Auburn (AL) and Opelika (AL).

The basketball shootout is one of many big events that we host at HCMS each year. It is always exciting to welcome schools from different areas to visit our campus.

This allows us to showcase our facilities, which we believe are the best of any middle school around.

This event is also one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, so try to come out and catch a week of action packed basketball.

Our wrestling team begins their season on Tuesday when they travel to Central. Our team looks to build on the momentum they had at the end of last year when they won the Division Championship, the first in school history.

We also had numerous wrestlers win first place in their individual weight classes in the Championship matches. Our first home wrestling match will be held Thursday Nov. 20 when Bowdon, Temple and Villa Rica come to town.

We hope to see you at some, if not all of our sporting events.
