On Saturday (June 30, 2012), at approximately 12:30 am, Troup County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Investigators were dispatched to 207 Jim Turner Road in reference to two subjects who had reportedly received gunshot wounds.
After their arrival, the two wounded subjects were located inside the residence lying on a couch. The two were attended to by Fire and EMS personnel.
The female subject identified as Linda Sykes (age 52 of West Point) was pronounced dead at the scene by the Troup County Coroner.
The wounded male subject identified as Richard Sykes, Sr (age 61 of Montgomery, AL) was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital, where he was pronounced dead later on Sunday.
Reportedly, the two were a separated husband and wife who had recently been encountering marital problems.
Through their investigation, the Troup County Sheriff’s Office has learned that Richard Sykes, Sr. had acquired a bicycle on Friday night. Later that evening, he parked his Nissan Sentra at a secluded location on a road nearby and rode the bicycle to the residence on Jim Turner Road where the incident took place.
An adult child, who also resided at the location, notified authorities after hearing the gunshots and finding the two wounded subjects inside the residence. Nothing further to report at this time.
