HCHS State Placers (L-R): Coach Kyle Yates, Luis Vasquez (5th-220), Gage Cannon (5th-152), Coach Jake Yates
(Macon, GA) — The 2016-17 Heard County High School wrestling season came to an end Saturday afternoon at the Centreplex in Macon with two local wrestlers finishing the GHSA three-day state traditional tournament by placing in the top six of their weight classes in Class AA.
Senior wrestler Luis Vasquez finished in fifth place at the state finals after gaining a second pinfall victory over Zachery Ferguson of Lamar County Saturday afternoon.
Vasquez’s two losses in the 220 pound bracket came to Ervin Mincey of Toombs County and state champion Ashton Gibson who only lost two matches all season.
Sophomore Gage Cannon also earned a fifth place finish in the 152 pound weight class.
After an opening round quarterfinal loss to Luke Anderson of Toombs County, Gage battled back to earn a second win over Anderson and another win over Elijah Thornton of Vidalia for the strong finish.
Cannon should be a strong contender at state for the next two years after such a strong finish for the young sophomore.
Sophomore Logan Moran and freshman Wyn Denney also finished top eight in the state and should be contenders in the coming years. Heard County has never fielded an individual state champion in wrestling although Matt Brown cam close with a runner-up finish in 2015.
Moran faced a tough draw in the heavyweight class dropping both of his matches to Social Circle wrestlers from one of the top programs in the state. Denney dropped his two matches at 160 pounds to older wrestlers from Toombs County and Dodge County.
Social Circle brought home the team state trophy. The Braves were coached by brothers Kyle and Jake Yates.
