UPDATE: Heard County Closings and Cancellations

(Franklin, GA) — Weather and travel issues have prompted many closings and cancellations in Heard County this week. See the below list for updated information and other weather related news as of Friday morning.

Cancellation/Closing Information

Travel Conditions — While roads are improving each day, travelers are advised to use caution in all areas as many roadways are still impacted by low temperatures and refreezing. Highs are expected to reach the mid 50’s today through Sunday so expect dramatic improvements.

Highway Closure — Highway 34 was closed by the DOT near Powers Crossroads late Thursday evening, but after some work and treatment was reopened a few hours later. Motorists are still advised to use caution in the area as well as other secondary and main roads that may still be affected by icing.

County Office Closure — All Heard County offices are closed again on Friday.

DOT Tragedy — A DOT worker driving a salt truck was killed by a train while attempting to drive across railroad tracks in Moreland early Thursday morning. He has since been identified as Carey Byron Ellerbee, age 60, of Thomaston, GA. Ellerbee had just finished a 12-hour shift salting the roads.

School Closings — All Heard County schools are closed Friday and will reopen Monday morning. Any make-up days will be announced at a later time.

Varsity Wrestling — The varsity wrestling tournament scheduled for Friday-Saturday at Bowdon has been changed to a one day tournament on Saturday in Bowdon.

Varsity Basketball — The Region 5-AA basketball games cancelled Tuesday have been rescheduled for Saturday, January 27 at HHS. The girls will play at 2:00 PM and be followed immediately by the boys at 3:30. The games at Callaway tonight have also been cancelled and will be rescheduled.

Middle Basketball — The three home HCMS basketball games cancelled this week will all be made up next week. The boys and girls will host Bay Springs on Monday, Temple on Wednesday, and Mt. Zion on Thursday. Games start at 5:00 PM each night. The middle playoffs scheduled for next week have been pushed back to the following week.

Chili Cook-Off — The Chili event scheduled for Saturday at HHS has been postponed to a later date.
