UPDATE: Missing Funds in Coweta Church Theft Estimated to be over $124,000

In a phone interview today, Major Jimmy Yarbrough of the Coweta County Sheriff’s office confirmed that at least $124,000 dollars is believed to be missing in the theft at Oaklawn Baptist Church in Newnan, Ga.

The Heard County Jail Administrator  Dena Thifault and her husband Gerard Thifault were both charged in the case with theft by taking after turning themselves into Coweta authorities last Thursday.

Yarbrough stated that the investigation is still ongoing and the dollar figure may be even higher once the financial investigation is complete.

Both Dena Thifault and Gerard Thifault have been released from the Coweta County jail on bond. According to Yarbrough, the alleged thefts took place over the last two years.

Dena Thifault was the church treasurer and her husband Gerard was the assistant treasurer.

Heard County Sheriff Ross Henry has agreed to meet with us in the next couple of days to discuss the impact this will have on the jail and sheriff’s department.

Thifault has been employed as a deputy with the Heard County Sheriff’s Department since 1999 and was currently serving as the jail administrator.
