UWG Wolves: Tearin’ up the Hardwood

The Coliseum at UWG is the place to be this winter as both the men’s and ladies basketball teams hit the hardwood for some fierce hoop competition.

This is the third year that the Coliseum has been the home of the Wolves. It opened to the public with the spring graduation ceremonies back in May of 2009 and has proven to be one of the marquee enhancements to the campus that continues to grow. The venue boasts seating for 7,500 spectators and provides a unique game experience that is rivaled by no other in the West Georgia area.

This year the men’s basketball team finds themselves currently ranked #2 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) with a perfect 4-0 record which includes three dominating victories over Columbus State University, Point University and Clark Atlanta.

The other win was a squeaker over Morehouse from Atlanta. Offensively, the Wolves are led by Da’Ron Sims from Oakland, California and Gavin Field from South Lake, Western Australia. Ironically, the 2012 roster has six players from the land down under.

The Wolves open up GSC conference play on January 5th as they take on the North Alabama Lions at the Coliseum followed by a match with Alabama-Huntsville on the 7th.

The Gulf South Conference continues to prove to be one of the finest conferences for small universities and colleges providing outstanding competition by teams that find themselves nationally ranked year after year.

The next scheduled home games for the men’s team are:

11-29 Nova Southeastern 7:30 pm
12-12 Clayton State 6:00 pm
12-14 Berry 7:30 pm

Please check www.uwgsports.com for any schedule changes.

The Lady Wolves began their season with a pre-season loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens but since then find themselves 1-1. After a very impressive road victory over Montevallo the ladies suffered a tough 1 point loss at the hands of Columbus State University.

Just like the men, the Lady Wolves begin GSC conference play on January 5th versus North Alabama with a 5:30 tipoff. Some key home match-ups on schedule for this season are (January 19th vs West Florida), (February 9th vs Delta State), (February 18th vs Valdosta State) and the season finale on (February 25th vs West Alabama).

The next scheduled home games for the Lady Wolves are:

11-30 Georgia College & State 7:00 pm
12-3 Morris 7:00 pm
12-12 Shorter 8:00 pm
12-19 Southern Poly 5:30 pm

So, when the skies turn gray and the winds blow cold this winter just head to the Coliseum at UWG and take in some great basketball competition. The Wolves are sure to be tearin’ up the hardwood all season long and hopefully right on into the Gulf South Conference tournament.
