Vote Julie Akers for District 2 Heard County Commissioner

Citizens of Heard County District 2:

I am originally from Pensacola, Florida.

After my father retired from the Navy we moved to LaGrange, Georgia.

In 1997, when I was attending the University of West Georgia, during my commute I would ride through Heard County.

I always enjoyed watching the children play on the elementary school playground.

My dream was for my children to be raised in a rural setting.

Five years ago, my dream came true, when my husband Rod and daughter Mary Katherine and I moved to Heard County.

When I was 13 years old, I began working in my father’s business. He was a home builder and real estate broker. My father not only taught me business skills but also the importance of serving in my community. I worked in the family business for 10 years.

Then I decided to move to Atlanta, GA to work as an Accountant for a general contractor. I also worked for the corporate offices of Longhorn Steakhouse and Wells Fargo Bank in their construction divisions.

I began serving my community as a Junior Volunteer, at West Georgia Medical Center the summer before entering high school. Since then I have always been a community servant.

I served as Treasurer, from 2012-2014 for Corrigan Care, a non-profit organization, that provides affordable, developmentally appropriate childcare for children with special needs.

I have been a member of the Junior League of Atlanta for 9 years. The mission of the Junior League is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

I have served on the leadership team and as a mentor to new members.

Since living in Heard County I have been a volunteer coach at the Heard County Recreation Department, I am currently a volunteer with Heard County Girl Scout Troop #13324, a classroom volunteer, PTO Committee Chair -Teacher Appreciation Week Committee, and I am serving my second term as a Parent Representative on the Centralhatchee Elementary School Council.

I promise to serve the citizens of District 2 and all of Heard County with honor and integrity.

It is important to me that the issues and concerns of EVERY citizen in Heard County are heard.

I believe in our taxes being spent responsibly and with transparency.

I will work with all municipalities and districts to preserve the rural heritage of Heard County.

Due to COVID-19, I will not be campaigning door to door. It is my firm belief that your health and safety come before politics.

I encourage everyone to remain positive and keep the faith during these uncertain times.

Each day, we are all navigating new territory as things change. We have all been affected by this pandemic and please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

The “Shelter in Place” order is for our protection. Please stay home as much as you can. Be mindful to our First Responders, and ALL essential workers who are here to SERVE.

If you are an active voter, the secretary of state will be mailing you an absentee ballot request form.

I also encourage you to check your voter registration and make sure your address is current to ensure that you receive the form being mailed. https://www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/mvp.do

This gives citizens the opportunity to vote from home to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said Tuesday all Georgia voters will be mailed absentee ballot request forms for the May 19 primary election.

Please know that I am available to talk or text, answer questions and listen to your concerns.
