(Franklin) — Former Assistant Principal and Assistant Superintendent, Rodney Kay, has a new administrative role in the Heard County School System as principal of Heard County High School.

Kay has been in education most of his life, starting out in the Carroll County School District as a Spanish teacher at Central High School for fourteen years. Not only was he an educator there, but Kay was also a coach for baseball and football.

For the past six years, Kay has been a part of the Heard County School System, serving as an Assistant Principal at the high school before moving to the central office to serve as an Assistant Superintendent.

Not only is education a big part of Kay’s life, but his family is as well. Kay who is originally from Forest Park, Georgia is married to Stephanie who is from Stone Mountain. Stephanie also has a career in education, serving as an education testing coordinator for Douglas County Schools.

Kay and his wife, Stephanie, have two children together. Their oldest child is their son Lee who is a freshman at Heard County High School. Their youngest child is their daughter Morgan who attends sixth grade at Carrollton Junior High School. Kay and his family currently reside in Carrollton.

Kay’s graduated from Forest Park High School in 1989. He then went on to attend Gordon Junior College and transferred to West Georgia to earn his degree in Spanish. After that, Kay went to Jacksonville State to get his Master’s degree in Leadership in 2006. Kay also earned a Specialist degree at Lincoln Memorial College in 2008.

Kay is not implementing any major changes to the school rules. The only alteration is headphones are not to be worn in the hallways because they may hinder student-teacher communication. However, there is a bigger emphasis on teaching and learning throughout Heard County High School. “I will be there to support the teachers so they can be there to support the students,” says Kay.

There is a new countywide website that is supposed to be used to keep parents more involved with their child’s school career. Parents can view a daily calendar which will inform them of their child’s notes and assignments. The new Heard County website can be found using this address: www.heard.k12.ga.us.

From this website, students can print their notes in advance for their classes. Kay wishes for the teachers to make their classrooms exciting so that students will want to come to school. He also wants for it to be a positive atmosphere so that the faculty and staff will also enjoy their jobs.

His vision for Heard County High School is for it to be an example of what a high school is supposed to be like for surrounding school systems. Kay states, “If teachers care, students are motivated, and parents are involved; you have a graduate.”

Kay also wants to embrace and use technology similar to what students have grown up using. Some ways that he has incorporated technology include creating Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts for the high school. The Instagram name is heardcountyhigh.

You can view pictures from various school activities. The Facebook profile name is Heard County High School and @HeardCountyHigh is the Twitter account name. Important information will be shared on these pages.
