Watson shuts down Social Circle; Lady Braves advance to Sweet 16

The Lady Braves relied on lights out pitching  and solid defense to advance over the Social Circle Redskins (8-AA) in round one of the GHSA-AA Playoffs Wednesday. The girls swept the first two games in the best-of-three series during a doubleheader at the high school.

The Lady Braves rolled in game one 8-0 in six innings and the game two final was 6-0 in seven innings.

Jordan Watson delivers a pitch during game one

Pitcher Jordan Watson was almost untouchable from the mound holding the Redskin offense to just four total base hits in both games combined.

Watson also led the way offensively in game two blasting a three-run homer to put the Braves on the board in the third inning.

The big blow in the game came on a three-run blast by Anna Shelnutt, her fourth homer of the season.

Sophomore Cali Harrod continued to shine at the plate with a single, three doubles, and a triple.

Catcher Jasmine Jacobs was also huge offensively in game one with two hits and three RBIs including the walk-off double which ended the game by run rule.

Game one was a close 2-0 affair until the Braves broke it open with four runs in the sixth. Center fielder Alyssa Bishop continued to swing a hot bat with several key hits.

“I told the girls they just needed to go out today and take care of business and play good defense and they responded,” said Coach Matt Hornsby after the game.

The Lady Braves will be on the road for round two next week as they travel to meet the Westminster Wildcats, a private Atlanta Christian school from Region 6-AA in another best of three series.

Westminster swept Pepperell (7-AA) in round one Wednesday defeating the Dragons 7-1 in the first game and 4-2 in the finale of a doubleheader played at Westminster.

“Westminster has a solid pitcher and I expect this will be a close hard-fought battle for both teams,” added Hornsby.

Hornsby and the Lady Braves hope to have lots of support when they hit the road next week (Time TBA). For directions to Westminster High School click here.
