(Franklin, GA) — Heard County athletics honored several winter sports seniors from basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, and sports medicine prior to Tuesday night’s varsity basketball games versus Temple.

Seniors representing the Lady Brave basketball team were Tori Caldwell and Morgan Kay, while Wyn Denney is the only HCHS senior wrestler.

Cheerleaders honored included Betty Covington, Tori Manders, Jamira Boleware, J.J. Swint, Lily Langley, and Marissa Garza. Senior sports medicine team members included Calista Addison and Alyssa Philpot.

In basketball action following the ceremony, the Lady Braves defeated Temple 44-21. Freshman Jasmine Owens led the scoring effort with 17 points.

Other top scorers included Tori Caldwell with nine, Sophia Long with seven, and Zekylah Boyd with seven. Morgan Kay and Mykhia Echols each had two.

The Lady Braves (12-9, 9-2) will travel to Spencer tomorrow night (6:00 PM) and still have hope of gaining the No. 1 seed in next week’s Region 5-AA tourney.

If the Lady Braves defeat Spencer and Callaway knocks off Lamar County in Lagrange then the Lady Braves would claim the top seed. Otherwise they will enter the tourney as the No. 2 seed.

The No. 1 scenario came into play following Spencer’s 52-44 upset win at Lamar County Tuesday night.

Regardless of the region outcomes, the Lady Braves have secured a spot in the 2020 GHSA Class AA State Playoffs. Region 5-AA will match up with Region 7-AA in the first round of the state playoffs February 14-15.

In boys action Tuesday night, the Braves fell to Temple for a second time this season by a final score of 52-39.

Ayden Cannon led the way with 14 points while D.J. Herring had nine, and Ike O’Neal scored seven. Khalil Cofield added six and Ashton Bonner scored two.

The Braves (6-17, 4-7) will play either Monday or Tuesday to open the Region 5-AA tourney dependent upon the outcomes of tomorrow night’s games. The Braves will also travel to Spencer tomorrow night to play at 7:30 PM.
