(Franklin) — Heard County and surrounding areas continue to experience some issues associated with this week’s winter storm system:
Schools — Heard County schools are closed today (staff to report at 10:30 if they feel safe) but everything should be back to normal on Monday.
Weather — Sunny skies are expected Friday with temperatures in the upper 50’s before falling back down near freezing tonight. Saturday’s high is expected to be in the upper 50’s again with cloudy skies and a 20% chance of rain. The Super Bowl Sunday forecast calls for high’s near 70 with a 70% chance of rain.
Travel — Some secondary roads remain dangerous at this time although vast improvements have been noted over the past 48 hours. People are being advised to still use caution when traveling.
State — On Thursday, Governor Nathan Deal extended the state of emergency through Sunday to allow for continued work to restore highways and interstates to normal.
Commerce — Most businesses and restaurants should be back to normal hours Friday.
Power Outages/ Frozen Pipes — Many people were beginning to report power outages and frozen pipes via facebook Thursday morning after temperatures were reported to be in the single digits in many nearby areas.
HHS Basketball Games Cancelled — Heard High’s home basketball games with Bowdon have been postponed to a later date.
HCMS Basketball Tournament Rescheduled — The Middle School championship basketball tournament in Bowdon has been rescheduled for next week. To see game times visit The Heard County Brave Nation facebook page.
Accidents — The following covers the period between 10 a.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Thursday: Statewide, Georgia State Troopers were dispatched to 1,521 traffic crashes with 184 injuries and one fatality. Another fatal crash was investigated by the Henry County Police Department. Troopers also assisted more than 1,185 motorists.
