Wolves Rise to #1 National Ranking

(Carrollton, GA/ uwgsports.com) — Head coach Will Hall and his football team have been rewriting the University of West Georgia football history books since the first snap of his first game at the helm of the program in the fall of 2014.

Hall and his charges took another step forward Monday, as the 2015 Wolves became the first Division II team ever at West Georgia to achieve a No. 1 ranking.

The Wolves were at the top of the ranking in Monday’s American Football Coaches Association poll after spending six weeks as the second-ranked team in the country, behind former No. 1 Minnesota State-Mankato.

The Wolves earned 25 first-place votes, followed by new No. 2 Northwest Missouri State, who picked up six first-place nods. Ferris State (Mich.), Colorado State-Pueblo and Ashland round out the top five.

The Wolves just finished a very dominant stretch, opening the conference season with four victories of 18 points or more, culminating with a 31-10 victory over then-No. 11 North Alabama this past weekend. The Mavericks fell from the No. 1 spot in this week’s poll after a 31-27 loss at home to unranked Winona State on Saturday.

West Georgia put on a clinic in the rushing game on Saturday against North Alabama to move to 8-0 on the year and 4-0 in Gulf South Conference play. UWG, which is one of just five undefeated teams left in Division II football, were led by redshirt Devontae Jackson, who had 16 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns on the day.

Senior quarterback Dallas Dickey also had 17 carries for 123 yards as the Wolves amassed 383 yards rushing, the fifth-most single-game rushing yards in school history en route to a convincing win in their third-straight matchup against a ranked opponent.

Up next for the No. 1 team in the nation is a trip back to Mississippi to take on the Mississippi College Choctaws this Saturday at Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton, MS, with kickoff set for 4:00 PM (EST).

The Wolves were in the Magnolia State just eight days ago, as UWG picked up win No. 7 on the season.
