Year of the Lady Brave continues with Region Track Championship

The Lady Braves track team added to the already super successful season for female sports in Heard County by capturing the Championship trophy this week at the Region 5-AA track meet.

The hardware will make a nice edition to the Brave Nation’s 2011-2012 trophy case which will now include softball, track and basketball titles for both the high school and middle school girls.

In fact, the only female team at either school to not win a title was the tennis team who finished a strong second last week. It was a close race for the region crown as the girls scored 143 points to just edge out second place Kendrick (135) and third place Carver High (126).

The Braves boys team also achieved one of its best finishes in several years with a strong second place (111) finish to a very talented Kendrick High School (149). One of the key highlights of the day was a first place medal in the 4 x 100 relay by Jasmine Cook, Jemeka and Shemeka Parks, and Recce Walker.

The 4 x 400 relay team was also key in clinching the title as they finished an unexpected 5th in the last event of the week. That tandem consisted of the Parks twins, Walker, and Cynthia Kirk.

Walker was responsible for a lot of the team points also finishing first in the high jump, third in the long jump, and third in the 100-meter dash. In the 3200 meter run Caitlin Newell finished a strong third at 17:11:00.

Newell also grabbed second place in the pole vault while fellow Lady Brave Tyesha Cook took home first place.

The duo of Crystal Dunson and Jasmine Cook dominated the shot and discuss with Dunson getting first in the discuss while Cook finished second and those roles were reversed in the shot put with Cook garnering first and Dunson second.

The Lady Braves dominated the triple jump with a first place by Shemeka Parks and a third place by freshman Kiara Robinson.

For the Braves men’s team, Orlando Burgos buried the field with gold medals in both the 3200 and the 1600 meter runs but the majority of the scoring came in the field events where Bill Singleton won first place in the pole vault as expected.

Corey Freeman snatched first place medals in the shot put and discuss. Three Braves grabbed impressive silver medals including Jonathon Hunt in the shot put, Qua Reid in the Long Jump, and Blake Tatom in the pole vault.

Hank Barnes brought home third in the discuss and Singleton also added a third in the 110 meter hurdles.

Duranta Dunson qualified for sectionals with a fourth place in the 400-meter dash. The top four from each event at region are now qualified to compete at sectionals which will take place at Greater Atlanta Christian (directions) in Norcross this Saturday April 28 beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The meet will last all day long and the top eight finishers in each event will qualify for the state finals in two weeks.
