Young Braves Stop 6th Ranked Westminster in Scrimmage

The Heard County Braves dropped the Westminster Wildcats 19-0 in a total of three varsity quarters played Friday night.

The very young Braves team which carries only four seniors and eleven juniors battled hard all night against the much bigger and deeper Wildcat squad which entered the game ranked 6th in Class AA.

Both teams struggled to score in the first half of the controlled scrimmage until the sophomore quarterback Jonathon Hunt connected with Senior Brandon Smith from 20 yards out to put the Braves on the board.

After the extra point by Bill Singleton the advantage was 7-0 with 5:40 remaining in the first half. Hunt and Smith connected for two more touchdowns on the night and the Braves came away with a stunning upset over the much bigger roster of the ranked Wildcats.

The Wildcats came into the game with 68 upperclassmen including 32 seniors. Westminster fared much better during the JV portion of the scrimmage in the third quarter as the offense controlled the action by a score of 18-6.

Even though it was only a controlled scrimmage with very little live special team action Coach Barron had to be pleased with his young team’s performance against the much more seasoned Wildcats.

Coach Barron should quickly find out more about his young team when the Braves open the regular season next Friday Night in Roanoke versus the Handley Tigers.
