15 Braves Advance to State Track Sectionals

(Franklin) — Nine girls and six boys from the Braves’ varsity track teams will be competing at the GHSA Class AA Track and Field Sectionals in Fitzgerald on May 2 after claiming spots at the Region 5-AA Track finals held at HCMS earlier this week.

The Lady Braves (107 team points) claimed a strong second place in the region finishing behind only Bremen. Temple took third place followed by Chattahoochee County, Manchester, and Bowdon.

Erica Emory led the way for the girls with two region championships in the long jump and the triple jump and a second place in the 100M dash.

Holly Moreland also claimed a region title with first place in the 1600M to go along with a second place in the 800M.

Other individual girls earning trips to Fitzgerald included Madison Whitehead (4th place – 200M), Caitlin Newell (2nd place – Pole Vault), Nikki Grier (2nd place -Triple Jump), Madison Laprade (3rd place – Triple Jump), Hannah Sanders (2nd place – Shot Put/ 3rd place – Discus Throw), and Khila Bradfield (4th place – Shot Put).

The 4 x 100 Relay squad consisting of Emory, Whitehead, Bradfield, and Kemaiya Brewer took fourth place an will also compete on May 2.

In the boy’s competition, the Braves took fifth place in the region with 83 points.

Austin Miller was the athlete of the day for the Braves advancing to the sectionals in four different events.

Miller won region titles in the Long Jump and Triple Jump to go along with a second place in the High Jump. Miller was also a part of the third place 4 x 100 team with Matthew Nilson, Mike Holmes, and Emory Jones.

Ethan Caldwell claimed another region championship for the Braves by winning the Pole Vault competition.

Brandon Cooley (4th place – Discus Throw) and Jones (4th place – High Jump) also advanced. Temple won the men’s region title just edging Bremen in points 144-142.

“I am very proud of how our team came out and competed today,” said head track coach Allen Sikes after the meet.

“It has been tough with all the rain we have been having to get in many practice sessions or meets. So with the limited amount of time we have had, I think we did pretty well. Erica Emory and Austin Miller had great days.”

The top four finishers in each event at the sectionals will advance to the GHSA State Track meets in Albany  on May 7-9 (girls) and Jefferson on May 14-16 (boys).
