The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program was created to focus public attention on Georgia’s outstanding students and the teachers who have influenced their academic development. Each year a top academic senior in each participating Georgia high school is named the STAR student for that high school.

The student must have the highest score on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class.  Each student is asked to name his/her STAR teacher.

Since Heard County School System has only one high school, the school winner is also the system winner. System winners go on to District recognition and District winners compete for State STAR student.

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) coordinates the statewide STAR program in association with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce

and Georgia Department of Education. The Heard County Chamber of Commerce has been the sponsor of this local recognition event for the STAR program’s existence.
