(Lagrange, GA) — The Heard County High School tennis season opened the season with a bang Thursday afternoon as both the male and female teams traveled to Troup County High School and scored impressive 4-1 wins over the Tigers.

Varsity tennis matches feature the top three singles competitors and the top two doubles teams from each school playing in a best of five scenario. Male and female matches are scored separately.

The boys team swept all three singles matches Thursday with solid efforts from the junior No. 1 Trey Wiggins, the senior No. 2 Lane Nelms, and the senior No. 3 Brian Hill.

In men’s doubles action, the combo of junior Michael Cadwell and freshman Garrett Callahan got a big win while the team of juniors Hunter Clark and John Helton narrowly dropped a close match.

“I was very pleased with our first match especially because I think Troup had already played a couple of matches,” said Braves tennis coach Rich Fendley after the match.

“I thought our boys went out and played hard for our first match. I was real impressed by Lane Nelms, Michael Cadwell, and Garrett Callahan.”

Only a freshman, Garrett Callahan also excelled at cross country this season. It has been very unusual in the Brave tennis program to see a freshman as a starting player considering there are no feeder tennis programs at either the middle school or recreation department.

Callahan is the younger brother of two of the best former tennis players at HHS, Brent and Jordan Callahan.

In the girls match, a couple of young players scored impressive hard court wins over the Tigers.

Sophomore No. 1 Melissa Collins and sophomore No. 3 Laurel Roberts both played well in the singles match wins. Senior No. 2 Angel North dropped a close match.

In doubles action, the No.1 team of senior Brittany Witcher and junior Megan Jordan got a win as did the No. 2 duo of senior Alexis Emory and junior Taylor Storey. Storey has come back healthy after suffering a broken arm during the softball season.

The girl’s team is looking to bounce back after a 2015 season that saw them not make the region finals match for the first time in team history.

“Melissa Collins and Laurel Roberts both really shined in their opening matches,” Fendley said. “Collins is showing a lot of promise for a young sophomore and Roberts played very well in her first ever single’s match.”

The Braves have home matches scheduled for this week with Newnan on Tuesday and Mount Zion on Thursday. All tennis matches start at 4:30.

The Braves typically always host the Region 5-AA tournament as the school with the nicest facility. The HHS campus features six courts.
