Braves battle for overtime win over Flint River

(Lagrange, GA) — The Heard County Braves battled back from a nine point third quarter deficit to score a 65-59 overtime win over Flynt River Academy Monday afternoon at Lagrange High School.

The holiday tournament win was just the second of the season for the young and rebuilding Braves but an important one as the squad gets ready to resume Region 5-AA action this Friday at home versus Bremen.

Monday’s game was a close battle throughout the first half with the Braves holding a 10-6 lead after a quarter. Flint led by just one point at the half before a 10-2 run to open the third quarter left the Braves trailing by as many as nine points before responding with a nice run of their own.

A big 3-point bucket from Chance Curbow cut the Flint lead to just 39-37 entering the fourth quarter before a Braves run would result in a 48-40 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Flint would not go away though as they used the 3-point bucket to their won advantage to tie the game and force the game to overtime tied at 54-54.

Ayden Cannon had a big night scoring 21 points including four in the overtime period while not far behind was Khalil Cofield who notched 17 points with five in the extra period.

Ike O’Neal was huge late in the game scoring 14 for the game including eight in the fourth quarter. Ty Smith scored six and Curbow had five.

First year head coach Derek Smith was pleased to see his team get a hard-fought win to gain some momentum before returning to region play.

“I think for a lot of our guys the game is starting to slow down a little bit and they are starting to play a better just because it’s not moving so fast for them,” said Smith after the game. “This is a great way to end the year and we are hoping after getting a coupe, of more days of practice in and fine tuning some things we can keep the momentum going.”

The Lady Braves saw their four game winning streak snapped at the Ola Christmas Tourney Monday afternoon with a 52-41 loss to a solid Class AAAA Eastside team from Covington.

Zekylah “Z” Boyd led the scoring for the Lady Braves with 13 in the loss — a season high for her. Tori Caldwell and Jasmine Owens each scored eight while Hermonie Garza had six points.

Both squads will return to the floor this Friday with big Region 5-AA home games versus Bremen beginning with the girls game at 6:00 PM at HCHS followed by the boys at 7:30 PM.

On Saturday, the teams will travel to Columbus for more Region 5-AA action versus Jordan. Those road games also tip-off with the girls game at 6:00 PM.
