(Franklin) — The Brave tennis teams both defeated Bowdon Monday afternoon after honoring the senior players before the matches.

The boys team dominated the Red Devils with all three singles players winning handily.

The junior No. 1 Trey Wiggins shut out his opponent 6-0, 6-0 to lead the way as the team win earned the Braves at least the No. 2 seed heading into the region tournament.

The Braves travel to Bremen today for the final region match-up and if they could pull the big upset over the region leading Blue Devils, things could get very interesting.

The No. 2 Brave singles competitor senior Lane Nelms ousted his opponent 6-1, 6-0. Nelms improved his overall record to 7-6 on the season. At the No. 3, another senior Brian Hill knocked off his opposition 6-1, 6-1. Hill and Nelms are the only two seniors on this year’s male squad.

In boys’ doubles action, John Helton and Hunter Clark won handily while freshman Garrett Callahan and Michael Cadwell edged C.J. Brewer and Hunter Jones on a 12-10 tiebreaker after the two teams split the first two sets.

In girls’ action, the Lady Braves had to battle hard for the 3-2 win despite a forfeit by the Red Devils in the No. 2 doubles match. Seniors Brittany Witcher and Alexis Emory took the forfeited doubles match.

No. 1 Melissa Collins and No. 2 Laurel Roberts both fell in close match-ups to the Red Devilettes. Collins dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match to Ali Jones while Roberts dropped a third set tiebreaker to Rylee Robinson in the match of the day after splitting the first two sets 4-6, 6-4.

The Lady Braves No. 1 doubles duo of Alexis Nelms and Taylor Storey got the crucial 6-1, 6-2 win to secure the No. 2 seed in the Region 5-AA tournament for the Lady Braves.

The boys and girls Region 5-AA tournament will take place at Heard High School in an all-day affair on April 12 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Head tennis coach Rich Fendley was pleased with the senior day effort of both his squads.

“We had a lot of seniors play tonight including some that don’t normally play as much so I am very proud of both the guys and the girls for getting these wins today and putting us in a nice position with at least a No. 2 seed,” said Fendley.

“I thought our boys’ singles players did a great job today because once those three won we had the match. On the girls side I was very proud of Alexis Nelms and Taylor Storey because they came through for us with the match tied at 2-2. Makayla Red also continued her solid play with a win for us that was very important.”

After today’s big region match-up with the Blue Devils, the Braves travel to Mount Zion on Thursday to close out the regular season in a non-region tilt.

The region tournament on April 12 will determine not only the Region Champions but will also seed the top four teams for the upcoming GHSA state tennis playoffs which begin the following week. Region 5-AA teams will face Region 8-AA squads in the first round of that tournament.
